bb-king

BB King has died. He was 89. Born Riley B. King on September 16, 1925 near Itta Bena, Mississippi, U.S. Died May 14, 2015 Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S.

After the cancellation of the remaining eight shows of his 2014 tour due to health problems, King announced on October 8, 2014 he was back at home to recuperate. On May 1, 2015, after two hospitalizations caused by complications from high blood pressure and diabetes, King announced on his website that he was in hospice care at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada. He died there on May 14 at 9:40 P.M. PDT.

I am very sad today. BB King’s music has been a big part of life and my musical upbringing. His music will live on. I also have my memories. Visiting Memphis, TN with my Brother and Dad and going to the BB King Blues Club. My Dad talking to some buskers and asking if me and my brother could sit in with them. My brother played the drums and I played guitar on Beale Street for two songs. I will never forget that. I will also never forget going to see BB King with my Dad a few years later in Reno, NV and sharing a beer, I was only 19 I think. His simplicity in his playing is something I strive for. Less is more. That was the major lesson I learned from listening to him play.

Peace & love to him and his family.

Malaika (live demo) – The Black Penguins

This is a live stereo demo recording of the song “Malaika” in the process of being made from around 2011. This was probably the second or third time we ever played it. I took that stereo recording then added some subtle keys, intro nature sounds, and the various video clips along with their audio as well.

Ben Colbeck – Guitar
Al Carter – Drums
eric toledo – Lead Guitar, Keys

Video edited by eric toledo using Final Cut Pro. Original footage by Wyatt Smith aka bIONIX and eric toledo. Plus random clips.

About Malaika

The chords and riff were written by Ben as well as the name of the song, “Malaika”.

Malaika is a Swahili song. Malaika generally means “angel” in Swahili. As is the case with many Swahili words, it is ultimately derived from Arabic. An alternative Swahili meaning is a “baby” or “small child”, hence at least one particular traditional version of the song is commonly used as a lullaby throughout East Africa. One of the better known versions is possibly the most famous love song in Kenyan pop music, as well as being one of the most widely known of all Swahili songs.
